Ischia through MezzaTorre

Ischia may be one of Italy’s best-kept secrets (as far as international travelers are concerned), an 18-square mile volcanic island hiding in plain view—yes, that’s the hazy outcropping you see in the distance as you sail to its sparkly neighbor Capri in the Gulf of Naples.

Mezzatorre is the newst adquision from Pellicano Hotels.
stands proud on the northwest tip of Ischia, above our private bay.

Il Pellicano and La Posta Vecchia are not only two of Italy’s most fabled hotels but gorgeous destinations in their own right, sought out by the world’s cognoscenti. They are joined by the suitably fascinating Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa, newly infused with that Pellicano personality.

Open for ‘the season’, each hotel captures the loveliest times in Italy from spring to autumn, when sunlight glints off the fresh seas lapping La Posta Vecchia’s ochre façade and the private coves beneath Il Pellicano and Mezzatorre. Make the Pellicano Grand Tour through Tuscany, Lazio and Campania.

Parts of the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley with Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow were shot on the island. And if celebrity spotting is your thing, head to Ischia in July when the Film Festival is in full swing.

Ischia town is an energetic evening scene, drop into the Americano café for live jazz in the gardens. If it’s morning try their speciality diminutive cappuccino. Via Roma has all the boutiques, great ice cream is at Cicco, pick up a cone and make an evening passegiata.

The castle of Mezzatorre has an ancient and fascinating history.
The name “Mezzatorre” derives from the presence of an ancient watch tower remained unfinished (from here “Mezza”) and built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century by the Aragonese as a watchtower. It was enlarged in the eighteenth century by the dukes of Rancidello.

Interiors are light, cool and calm with just a hint of retro charm in the detailing, here a brass lamp and mirror, there an illustrated book of matches. Beds are designed with a deep sleep spell, a place to refresh. Bathrooms feature an eclectic display of Italian tiles, otherwise opulent interiors are on view in a heavyweight copy of Mondadori’s Cabana, on your book shelf.
